Miss Lowndes does not realise the power of story-telling she possesses” – Dorset stories written by Mary Lowndes (artist)

Mary Lowndes is generally acknowledged as the first woman in England to earn her living from all aspects of stained glass. She grew up in Sturminster Newton but went to art school in London where she co-founded a stained glass firm, Lowndes & Drury.

She was also a prolific writer and commentator on current affairs, art and politics, including of short stories that drew on her formative years in Sturminster Newton – but she doesn’t attempt Dorset dialect.
